表「勒索」,雖然有 mail 這個字,但跟信件一點關係也沒有喔。
mail 在古蘇格蘭文中表示「租金」,用來繳租金的銀幣被稱為 whitemail。但在當時,農夫們還被迫要繳保護費,相對於合法的 whitemail,這些保護費就被稱為 blackmail。另一種說法則是由於農夫常以黑色的牛隻來充當保護費,故稱為blackmail。
- There is no way that I would give in to your blackmail and pay you any money.
我絕不會屈服於你的勒索並付錢給你。
