Indigo dyeing is an ancient art of dyeing and patterning clothes with an especially beautiful blue dye. The dye itself comes from the indigo plant, which grows very well in humid mountain climates. When fermented, the plant produces a brilliant blue dye.

Indigo dyeing is well known as a traditional cloth manufacturing technique in Japan, but Taiwan has its own home-grown indigo industry. Taiwan’s indigo dyeing industry bloomed in the 1800s, when the rich blue dye was considered very fashionable. However, the local cloth dyeing business began to decline around the turn of the 20th century, when the textile industry began to modernize.
