Playing with Play-Doh—or one of the many similar products—is now a common childhood experience around the world. More than three billion cans of Play-Doh have been sold since it was given its new purpose. Though the original dough was white, there are now 50 different colors of Play-Doh. There are also creative sets that range from monster labs to kitchens and animal creation stations.
Ownership of Play-Doh moved from the McVickers’ Kutol to Rainbow Crafts in the 1950s, where the product was perfected by Play-Doh expert Dr. Tien Liu. While the dough’s exact recipe is a top secret, its primary elements are water, salt, and flour. In fact, it’s even safe to eat (but who would really want to?).
On the topic of eating Play-Doh, there’s little chance anyone would want to eat it due to the unique smell it gives off. In fact, the unique smell of Play-Doh is even trademarked. For the product’s 50th anniversary, Hasbro, a toy company, even released a perfume that smells like Play-Doh. While it hasn’t sold well, it remains available on the market to this day.
