What happens when we look into another person’s eyes?

Looking into someone’s eyes is a normal part of daily life. We make judgments based on how long or short a person makes eye contact. In movies, locking eyes is often romantic, but if someone looks at us for too long, it can make us _(1)_. This is because it appears that we’re different or not normal.

Researchers are studying the unconscious reactions that happen when we make eye contact. They have found that making eye contact makes us less _(2)_ of what is happening around us. We become more focused on the person looking at us. Eye contact also increases brain activity and makes us more self-conscious. Researchers have found that even looking at a painting that appears to be making eye contact can also affect areas of the brain _(3)_ to thinking about ourselves and other people.
