If you’ve ever been on a trip, you probablyhave some. They’re small, usually not very expensive, and not too heavy. We call these things souvenirs, from the French word souvenir , which means “to remember.” In some cultures, the custom isn’t to bring a gift home for yourself, but for others. For the Japanese,a trip means buying omiyage (souvenirs) to give to your friends and colleagues. People in the Philippineshave a similar tradition called pasalubong.
In Taiwan, coworkers often share snacks like Taichung’s most famous suncakes. Those are souvenirs, too. Souvenirs are an important part of the tourism industry. In fact, business people have found the best time to sell souvenirs is when tourists are leaving a place. That is why the gift shop is always located at the end of the museum tour and why there are duty-free shops at the airport. This is also why bands sell merchandiseafter the show.Souvenirs are great ways to remember good times.
