Explore Taiwan’s very own Dark Sky Park on Hehuan Mountain
When you look up at the night sky in the city, what do you see? Maybe you can spot a few stars and the Moon. However, if you canget away from the glare of city lights, a whole galaxy is on display.
The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) works to protect nighttime environments from light pollution. The association encourages people to think about the types of lights they use and provides advice on how to keep the sky dark at night. The IDA has namedseveral places around the world as dark sky areas.
Some of the most remoteand darkest places in the world are called Dark Sky Sanctuaries. Many of these sanctuaries are located in the United States. There are also Dark Sky Parks. These are protected natural spaces with appropriateoutdoorlighting, which are easier for the public to reach. Other dark sky areas include Dark Sky Reserves and Dark Sky Communities. The former typically refers to large areas of land where efforts are made to preserve the night sky, while the latter can be a town or city that has shown great dedication to the cause. There are also Urban Night Sky Places, which are locations near or within urban areas that try to maintain the night sky’s natural darkness.
