but除了「但是」，以下用法也超級重要，不同的組合用法也會有不一樣的意思。

介紹 but 表「除了......之外」的重要用法

• The source of purple dye used to be very rare, making the dye unaffordable to all but the super-rich.
紫色顏料的來源曾相當稀少，這使紫色顏料只有超級有 錢人才負擔得起。

• Everyone but Emily went to the party.
除了艾蜜莉以外，大家都去了派對。

a.  all but + Adj./Adv./V  幾乎⋯⋯

* 此用法中，all but 等於副詞 almost(幾乎)之 意。

• Beth’s performance was all but perfect.
貝絲的表演幾近完美。

b.  be anything but + N/Adj.   絕不/根本不/一點也不(是)⋯

= be not + N/Adj. + at all / be far from + N/Adj.

*此處的 anything but 視為副詞，譯成「絕非、根 本不、一點也不」，後面接名詞或形容詞作主詞補語。

• Edward is a good journalist, but he is anything but a scholar.
艾德華是個好記者，但絕非是一名學者。

c.  be nothing but + N/Adj.  只不過是⋯

*此處的 nothing but 意思等同於 nothing more than、only。

• It’s nothing but a joke. Don’t take it seriously.
這只不過是個玩笑。別太認真了。

d.  do nothing but V  除了⋯⋯外什麼都不做

• Babies do nothing but eat and sleep most of the time.
寶寶多數時間都是在吃跟睡而已。

e.  have no choice / option / alternative but to V  除了⋯⋯外別無選擇，不得不⋯

• You have no choice but to write the essay all over again.
你別無選擇，只能再重寫一份作文。
