Lulu: Well, I heard it through the grapevine that you have another girlfriend.
Steve: What're you talking about?
Lulu: Tina. My friend Susan told me about her.
Steve: But Tina is just a friend.
Lulu: I find that hard to believe. You've got to prove it to me.
 

 

史蒂夫：妳為何想談談？
　露露：我想我們分手吧。
史蒂夫：為什麼？我以為一切都進展得很順利。
　露露：這個嘛，我聽說你有另一個女朋友。
史蒂夫：妳在說什麼？
　露露：蒂娜啊。我朋友蘇珊把她的事都告訴我了。
史蒂夫：但蒂娜只是個朋友。
露露：我很難相信你說的話。你必須證明給我看。

 

俚語精解

grape 是『葡萄』，grapevine 是『葡萄藤』。hear something through the grapevine 意思就是指『從小道消息得知』。

昨天阿雄與老闆發生激烈爭執，因此傳聞阿雄想辭職不幹。阿花就問阿雄：
I heard it through the grapevine that you're quitting.
= People say that you're quitting.
= Word has it that you're quitting.
= Rumor has it that you're quitting.
= It is said that you're quitting.
= My sources told me that you're quitting.
= A little bird told me that you're quitting.（非正式）
（聽說你要辭職了。）
＊quit  vi. 辭職（三態同形）
阿雄聽了很驚訝，因為他根本離不開他的心上人阿花。所以回答：
That's not true. Where did this rumor ever get started?
（那不是真的。這個謠言到底是從哪裡傳出來的啊？）

辦公室待久了總是令人感到無聊乏味，適度的八卦可以增進同事情誼，生活也多了一些交集喔。

如果哪天我們想和同事聊八卦，就可以用這些句子做開場白：

I heard it through the grapevine that... （我聽說⋯⋯）

There has been a rumor going around the office about... （辦公室最近有個傳言，是有關於⋯⋯）

hear 表『聽到』。當我們很贊同他人的說法時，有下列實用句子：
