分詞（participle），亦為動狀詞之一，有兩種形式，即『現在分詞』（V-ing）與『過去分詞』（pp.），但都與現在或過去的『時間』無關。現在分詞經常搭配 be 動詞形成『進行式』。過去分詞經常搭配 have/has 形成『完成式』或搭配 be 動詞形成『被動語態』或作『主詞補語』使用。除此之外，分詞也常單獨作『形容詞』修飾名詞。

- The heartbreaking story made everyone cry.（現在分詞表主動）
（這個傷心的故事讓大家都哭了。） - The heartbroken / broken-hearted man eventually committed suicide.（過去分詞表被動）
（這個心碎的男子最後自殺了。） - Beware of falling stones when you are driving on the mountain road.（正要落下的）
（在這條山路開車時要注意落石。） - The road was covered with a lot of fallen stones.（已經落下的）
（當時這條路上堆積著很多落石。） - I must admit I attended an interesting party last night.（令人感到有趣的）
（我必須承認我昨晚參加了一個有趣的派對。） - The opportunity will be open to any interested party.（本身有興趣／有關的）
（這個機會將對任何相關人士開放。）
補充說明 ：有些現在分詞可作『副詞』來修飾 cold, hot, wet, drunk 或 mad 少數幾個形容詞，如：
- biting / freezing cold （天氣、水溫）非常寒冷的
- boiling / scalding / steaming hot （水氣／溫）很燙的
- burning / broiling / scorching hot （天氣）極為炎熱的
- dripping / soaking / sopping wet （衣物）濕淋淋的
- roaring / stinking drunk 爛醉的
- hopping mad 暴跳如雷的
