The highly anticipated film, 96 Minutes, is the opening feature of the 2025 Taipei Film Festival. This cinematic spectacle, nine years in the making with a budget of NT$160 million, is a collaboration between producer Kevin Chou (The Tag-Along series) and director Hung Tzu-hsuan (The Scoundrels). The film boasts a stellar cast, including Austin Lin, Vivian Sung, Wang Po-chieh, Julian Li, Yao Yi-ti, Kent Tsai, and Freddy Lee.

Three years after a devastating bomb attack forces bomb disposal expert Sung Kang-jen (Austin Lin) to leave the front lines, he and his police detective wife Huang Hsin (Vivian Sung) board a high-speed train bound for Kaohsiung. Suddenly, they receive a chilling alert from his former superior, Lee Chieh (Julian Li)—a bomb is on board! A physics tutor, a victim's family member, and unsuspecting passengers are all thrown into a life-or-death situation. Now, Sung Kang-jen has just 96 minutes to defuse the bomb while confronting his deeply buried past. Can he save everyone on the train before it's too late?

Known for her sweet and cheerful demeanor, actress Vivian Sung makes a bold transformation, portraying the resilient detective Huang Hsin. She is not only her husband's emotional anchor but also his most reliable partner in this crisis. To prepare for the role, Sung consulted with several female police officers, gaining a deep understanding of their emotional strain and moments of helplessness under high-pressure work environments. She masterfully channeled these complex and authentic emotions into her groundbreaking performance.

The experience of watching 96 Minutes in the cinema is truly special. For many, it's about more than just seeing a movie—it's about showing tangible support for the industry. My wife initially wanted to wait for it to be released on a streaming platform to save some money. But I insisted on buying tickets and watching it in the theater. It was a way to show our support for the box office, and I was confident that a film with such massive scenes and effects should be experienced on the big screen. This kind of support is invaluable for filmmakers who take such a leap of faith.

But as with many ambitious projects, the film has also faced its share of criticism. Some audience members have been quick to pick apart the plot, labeling certain scenes as “unrealistic” or “over-the-top.” This level of scrutiny, however, raises a broader question: Do we hold Chinese-language films to a higher, more rigid standard than we do for their Western counterparts? No one complains when a Hollywood action movie features a hero jumping from a skyscraper or a car flying through the air. Yet, when a Chinese-language film attempts to push the boundaries of realism, we are often quick to dismiss it.

This mindset is deeply rooted in traditional Eastern culture. We are taught from a young age to be "strict with ourselves and lenient with others" (嚴以律己、寬以待人), to "be modest and reserved," and to not "overestimate ourselves" (不自量力). These are certainly virtues that promote humility and harmony. But what if they also stifle creativity and innovation? This self-censorship, born from a fear of failure or criticism, can prevent filmmakers from venturing beyond traditional genres like historical dramas or romantic comedies. They may avoid risky concepts, fearing that audiences will find them "too much."

The film 96 Minutes is a perfect example of what can happen when filmmakers dare to dream big. Its origin story, a decade in the making, is a testament to perseverance. Ten years ago, the idea of a high-octane Chinese-language sci-fi thriller with world-class special effects was almost unthinkable. The project faced immense challenges and skepticism, but the creators persisted, working tirelessly to turn a seemingly impossible dream into reality.

We must learn to give ourselves and others the same grace we extend to others. While it is important to be disciplined and humble, we should also be brave enough to pursue our passions and make our dreams a reality. Just like the creators of 96 Minutes, we should not let the fear of being "unrealistic" stop us from pursuing what is possible. It's time to move beyond self-imposed limitations and embrace a future where our greatest potential is no longer suppressed by our greatest fears. As long as we don't harm ourselves or others, let's be fearless in bringing our wildest ideas to life.
