The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) announced on December 1, 2025, that “rage bait” has been chosen as its Word of the Year 2025. The Oxford Languages team defines rage bait as posts that rely on provocative or upsetting content to trigger emotional reactions, a tactic similar to “clickbait” but centered on outrage rather than curiosity.
According to the OED, use of the term has tripled over the past year. Casper Grathwohl, President of Oxford Languages, noted that its rise reflects growing awareness of online emotional manipulation. He said the internet has moved from click-driven behavior to an emotion-driven model shaped by algorithms.
Other shortlisted words include “aura farming,” the practice of curating an appealing persona, and “biohack,” meaning to attempt to improve one’s health through diet, exercise, or technology.
