Imagine running away from a group of zombies. You hide behind a wall and wait quietly.A few minutes later, the zombies suddenly appear at your hiding place. How did they find you? In most zombie movies, the infected are slow, mindless creatures. They attack anything that moves but rarely think or learn.
However, the zombies in the 2026 Korean film Colony are different. They seem to share information with one another. When one infected person discovers something, the others quickly react as if they all know it too. Throughout the movie, the infected become smarter, more organized, and harder to escape. This frightening idea is based on a real scientific concept called collectiveconsciousness.
In Colony, scientists discover that the infection does not simply change the human body. Instead, it creates a biological network connecting infected individuals together. The infected behave less like separate people and more like a single living organism. When one infected person spots a survivor, others nearby immediately respond. When one learns a new path, the information seems to spread throughout the group. The result is something similar to a hive mind, a system in which many individuals share one collectiveawareness. This makes the infected far more dangerous than traditional movie zombies.

As strange as it sounds, nature has examples of similar behavior. Ant colonies, bee swarms, and schools of fish often work together without a leader. Each individual follows a few simple rules, yet the group can perform surprisingly complex tasks. Scientists call this swarm intelligence.
The idea inspired many scenes in Colony, especially the moments when large groups of infected move almost like a single creature.
One of the most fascinating examples comes from army ants. Sometimes, these ants accidentally lose their chemical trail. Instead of finding a new direction, they begin following one another in a giant circle. Because each ant trusts the ant in front of it, the entire group becomes trapped.
This phenomenon is called an ant mill, or a "death spiral." The ants may continue marching in circles for hours or even days until they collapse from exhaustion. Watching these ants is surprisingly similar to some scenes in Colony, where infected crowds endlessly follow one another without questioning where they are going.
The movie raises an uncomfortable question: Could humans behave in similar ways? Today, social media allows information to spread faster than ever. People often repeat opinions, trends, or rumors simply because everyone else is doing the same thing. Like ants following a trail, we sometimes follow the crowd without stopping to think.
Perhaps that is the hidden message behind Colony. The greatest danger may not be the infection itself—but the loss of independent thought. After watching the film, you may never look at an ant colony in the same way again.
由法國社會學家 Émile Durkheim 最早提出:CollectiveConsciousness(集體意識)指一個群體共享的價值觀、信念與認知。 • This frightening idea is based on a real scientific concept called collectiveconsciousness.(這個可怕的設定來自真實存在的科學概念——集體意識。)
• The event became part of the nation's collective memory. • Climate change requires collective action.
A shared experience can strengthen a group's collectiveconsciousness.
• The infected behave like a hive mind.
• Everyone suddenly started buying the same product. It felt like a hive mind.
搭配詞 • The creatures gradually developed a hive mind.
• The insects operate as a hive mind.
• Social media can sometimes encourage a hive-mind mentality.
• No single ant is smart, but together they create swarm intelligence.
follow the crowd|跟風;盲從
• We sometimes follow the crowd without thinking.(我們有時會不加思索地跟隨群眾。)

搭配詞 • Teenagers should not blindlyfollow the crowd.

Instead of + V-ing
Instead of finding a new direction, they begin following one another.
Because + 子句
Because each ant trusts the ant in front of it, the entire group becomes trapped.
Similar to =與……
The behavior is similar to scenes in the movie.
similar to,比 like 更正式。
• The situation is similar to what happened last year.(這個情況和去年發生的事情很相似。) • The twins look very similar to each other.(這對雙胞胎看起來非常像。)

Q1
The infected in the movie seem to share information through a __________ __________.
Q2
The ants became trapped because they continued to __________ the __________.
Q3
Instead of finding a new direction, the ants eventually __________ from __________.
1. hive mind
2. follow the crowd
3. collapsed / exhaustion
