not only... but also... 的用法

意為「不但......而且......」,為相關連接詞,其功能與對等連接詞類似,是用於連接兩個詞性相同的單字、片語或結構類似的子句。使用時需注意以下幾點:

 ❶若是用於連接主詞,動詞須依照最近的主詞作變化。

Not only my brother but also my parents are going to the park later.
不只我的弟弟還有我的父母晚點都會去公園。
Not only my boss but also five staff members have attended the convention.
不只我老闆還有五位員工都去參加大會。

❷ 連接主要子句時,則須將 also 置於句中。然而,also 也可予以省略,此時句尾可搭配使用 as well。

The exhaust from vehicles ruins not only the air but also our breathing systems.
= The exhaust from vehicles ruins not only the air but our breathing systems as well.
車輛排出的廢氣不僅汙染了空氣,還損害了我們的呼吸系統。
Kenny not only helped clean up the shelter but also donated some money to it.
= Kenny not only helped clean up the shelter but donated some money to it as well.
肯尼不僅幫忙清理了收容所還捐了一些錢。

❸ 連接對等的主要子句時,由於 not only 置於句首,視為否定副詞片語,第一個主要子句要倒裝,若句子內為一般動詞則需搭配助動詞 do、does 或 did 形成倒裝句;而 but also 僅為連接詞,故其後的第二個主要子句不需倒裝,但 also 則一定要省略或移至句中。亦可將 also 省略在句尾加 as well。

Cathy is my teacher’s favorite student.
She is also the most popular girl in school.

➡ Not only is Cathy my teacher’s favorite student, but she is (also) the most
               not only 連接的主句需要倒裝                              but also 連接的主句不需倒裝
popular girl in school.
= Not only is Cathy my teacher’s favorite student, but she is the most popular girl in school as well.
凱西不僅是我的老師最喜歡的學生,還是全校最受歡迎的女孩。

My mom set a target for me.
She also put pressure on me.

➡ Not only did my mom set a target for me, but she (also) put pressure on me.
          not only 連接的主句為一般動詞需依時態搭配助動詞
= Not only did my mom set a target for me, but she put pressure on me as well.
我媽媽不僅為我設定了目標,還在我身上施加壓力。
