Rita: I didn't see you in science class this afternoon. Where were you?
Grace: I decided to skip class. I didn't feel like going.
Rita: No one wants to go, but we have to, anyway.
Grace: Yeah, but cutting class isn't that big of a deal. I do it all the time.
Rita: I know you do. That's why you're flunking all of your classes.
Grace: You don't have to remind me.

　麗塔： 今天下午的理化課我沒看到妳。妳去哪兒了？
葛瑞斯： 我決定蹺課。我不想去上課。
　麗塔： 沒有人想去，但是不管怎樣我們還是得去呀！
葛瑞斯： 是沒錯，但是蹺課也不是什麼大不了的事。我一天到晚蹺課。
　麗塔： 我知道妳是啊。那就是為什麼妳所有的課都被當掉的原因。
葛瑞斯： 妳不必提醒我。

俚語精解

skip  指『跳過』，skip class 字面意思是『跳過上課』，也就是『蹺課』的意思。

一起床就看見窗外晴空萬里，他馬上決定要蹺課，好好享受一下美麗的早晨。
Seeing the beautiful weather outside, he decided to skip class.
= Seeing the beautiful weather outside, he decided to cut class.
= Seeing the beautiful weather outside, he decided to ditch class.
= Seeing the beautiful weather outside, he decided to play hooky.
（看見外面天氣很好，他決定要蹺課。）

　hooky  n. 逃學

以下介紹幾個跟上課相關的用語：

call the roll　　點名
= take the roll
= take attendance
他翹課想去海邊走走，途中路過學校時，班上同學正在上體育課，老師剛好點到他的名字，我們就可說：
The teacher was calling the roll when he passed by.
= The teacher was taking the roll when he passed by.
= The teacher was taking attendance when he passed by.
（他經過的時候，老師剛好在點名。）
＊roll  n. 名單，名冊
　attendance  n. 出席
　pass by　　經過

count noses　　清點人數
= count heads
= do a head count

老師點完名後以為全班都到齊了，可是點人頭時卻發現少了一個。
The teacher counted noses and found that one was missing.
（老師清點人數後發現少了一個人。）

　missing  a. 缺席的；失蹤的

scare the hell out of someone　　把某人嚇一大跳

眼看老師被他耍地團團轉，他沾沾自喜地躲在樹後面，怎知轉身正準備要繞跑時，竟看到老師的臉在他面前。
The teacher's face scared the hell out of him.
= The teacher's face scared the pants off him.
（老師的臉把他嚇得魂飛魄散。）
＊scare  vt. 使驚嚇
　pants   n. 褲子（恆用複數，因為褲子有兩條褲管）
　a pair of pants　　一條褲子（非 a pant）
