The “Michael Jordan of Climate” and Two Other Scientists Win Nobel Prize
2021年諾貝爾物理獎得主揭曉 美德義三學者共享桂冠殊榮

This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was shared by three scientists. Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann were recognized for their efforts in establishing reliable climate prediction models. Giorgio Parisi received the award for his research on observing order in complex systems.
Even though the prize recognized two disciplines of research that seem unrelated, they both help to understand Earth’s climate. The research helps scientists forecast what may happen in a system that appears random and chaotic. Scientists already knew that carbon dioxide could trap heat and make the atmosphere warmer. Manabe’s model from 50 years ago, however, accurately showed how climate change could worsen depending on how much pollution was created. Manabe is such a visionary that he was dubbed the “Michael Jordan of climate” by a fellow climate expert. The Nobel Prize committee honored all three scientists for contributing to the foundation of modern climate science.
