Why Children Enjoy Repetitive Storytelling
文意選填
Ask any parent, and they will probably tell you that children seem to thrive on having set routines throughout the day. Furthermore, a child’s need for routine is perhaps most apparent at bedtime, when most children expect to be tucked in and hear a bedtime story. In fact, a child may crave routine to such an __1__ that they wish to hear the same story night after night. To an adult, this can seem like a __2__ and monotonous task. For children, however, hearing the same story again and again♦ can actually have multiple emotional and intellectual __3__.
During any given day, young children—particularly those who have recently started __4__ school—are frequently faced with unfamiliar situations. Their lack of __5__ of these situations can lead to fear, and thus raise their level of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone. At night, the safety of being in bed with a familiar bedtime story can help __6__ the stresses that have built up over the day.
Consequently, hearing the same story time and again can improve a child’s intelligence by enhancing their perception of logical __7__. Let’s say a child is hearing a story for the second time; from the beginning, the child will be able to __8__ what will happen next. Then, the child will begin to recognize the sequence of events that leads to the __9__. If this ability is nurtured and developed, it can help the child in other areas, such as math or science.
So, the next time a child asks you to read them their __10__ book again, don’t turn them down just because you’ve already read it to them a dozen times. This repetition may provide them with many cognitive advantages that will become very clear down the road.
