Koalas, those adorable, furry, gray, button-nosed creatures hanging on the sides of trees, are only found in Australia. It’s no wonder they’ve become a symbol of the country. Read on to learn five more fascinating and fun facts about koalas!

Koalas are NOT a type of bear.
Despite commonly being referred to as “koala bears,” these tree-huggers are actually members of the marsupial family, making them cousins of kangaroos and wombats.

Baby koalas live in their mother’s pouch.
Just like kangaroos and other marsupials, koala babies are born deaf, blind, and hairless. They spend the first half-year of their lives in a warm pouch on the front of their mother’s body. Also like kangaroos, koala babies are called “joeys.”
