April Fools’ Day is an old and mysterious tradition.
April Fools’ Day is celebrated every year on April 1. The holiday is an occasion to play harmless tricks on friends and family such as preparing fake food or taping a “kick me” note on someone’s back. Yet, nobody knows exactly how the tradition got started, but there are a number of theories.
Some people think April Fools’ Day began as an ancient festival honoring a god who died every winter and came back to life every spring. To celebrate his return, people would dress up in costumes and imitate each other. The first written reference to April Fools’ Day is from a 1561 poem by Eduard De Dene. In the poem, a servant goes out to do some tasks for his master, but when he remembers that the day is April 1, he realizes they are all “fool’s tasks.”
