A new survey has found that the northern and central parts of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia have been making a comeback, namely due to the growth in a coral called Acropora. This coral, while it grows quickly, is very sensitive to climate change threats and could easily disappear if global warming worsens. The survey found that in times of limited environmental disturbances, the Great Barrier Reef has the possibility of recovering to its former glory.
However, coral bleaching still occurs, and it has been happening more frequently than before. What’s worse, the corals found at the southern part of the reef are still in decline. The main reason for this is a kind of starfish that eats the coral. Warmer water improves the survival rate of this starfish, allowing it to multiply and eat even more coral.
