until / till 的用法

句型 (1)：

S + V... until / till +	① 時間	…直到…
	② S + V...

• They sat there chatting until midnight.（介系詞）
  （他們坐在那裡聊天直到午夜。）
• I'll stay here till you come back.（連接詞）
  （我會待在這裡直到你回來。）
   

句型 (2)：

S + be / 助動詞 + not... until...　　　直到……才……

• I will not leave until you give me an answer.
  （直到你給我一個回答我才會離開。）
• Jeff was not aware of the danger until the next morning.
  （直到隔天早上傑夫才知道有危險。）

 

《補充說明》 

1. not 可因句子變化需要代之以 none / nothing / never / hardly 等否定字。
2. Not until + (S + V) 置於句首時，其後的主要子句須倒裝。
3. It is/was not until... that + S + V... 是『強調句』。
   例: I did not know I was in love with her until then.
   = Not until then did I know I was in love with her.
   = It was not until then that I knew I was in love with her.
   （直到那個時候我才知道我已愛上她。）
