Scott: I need to find another place to live in.
Paul: I thought you loved living in the dorms.
Scott: I did, but now we have to sign in and out all the time.
Paul: What happened?
Scott: A guy in our building had a couple of his friends living in his room. They were there for five months.
Paul: Now you're all having to pay the price.
Scott: It just goes to show that one rotten apple spoils the barrel. Now we all have to carry a pass and sign in every evening.

 

史考特： 我需要另外找地方住。

史考特： 這證明了一粒老鼠屎，壞了一鍋粥。現在我們每晚都必須帶通行證還要簽到。

 

俚語精解

 rotten 是形容詞，表『腐爛的』，通常是指食物或是木頭。

The wood was rotten.
（這塊木頭爛掉了。）
The fruit is starting to go rotten.
（這水果快要壞掉了。）

one rotten apple spoils the barrel 字面上的意思是『一顆壞掉的蘋果會讓整桶的蘋果都跟著腐爛』。也就是中文所說的『一粒老鼠屎，壞了一鍋粥』。spoil 是動詞，表『破壞』。barrel 『 桶子』。

貝瑞在唸高中時因為愛玩樂器，所以成績一直吊車尾。此外，他上課時也都是正大光明地翹腳聽音樂。整個班級受到他的影響，越來越多人上課都在聽音樂。某天，老師終於忍不住對貝瑞說：
One rotten apple spoils the barrel. You're setting a very bad example.
= The rotten apple injures its neighbors. You're setting a very bad example.
（一粒老鼠屎，壞了一鍋粥。你真是個壞榜樣。）
從本單元的慣用語引申出了 a rotten apple（害群之馬） 的用法，也就等於 a black sheep。

貝瑞的父親知道了阿雄在學校的荒旦行徑之後，回家痛打了他一頓。因為貝瑞的父親知道：
Spare the rod and spoil the child.　　
（不打不成器。── 諺語）

　rod   n. 棍子，竿子
　spoil  vt. 寵壞

有關於 barrel（桶子） 還有下列有趣的用法：
have someone over a barrel　　使某人任人擺佈
據說以前大家把溺水的人從水裡救上來後，習慣會讓這個人俯身躺在側放的大桶上，再來回滾動大桶，使該溺水者將積水吐出來。日後大家即以上述俚語引申為『使某人任人擺佈』之意。 可想而知，伏在桶上奄奄一息的人只好任由他人擺佈了。

父親要貝瑞暑假幫忙家裡賣麵，否則就不幫他買樂器。貝瑞不得已，只好每天早上從被窩裡爬出來幫忙。貝瑞就跟朋友抱怨：
My father had me over a barrel─either I had to work during summer vacation or he wouldn't give me the money to buy the guitar I wanted.
（我爸讓我沒得選擇。我得在暑假找份工作，否則他就不給我錢買我要的吉他。）
