out of the Running 是跑步之外? 15 個 out of 用法一次學起來

Rita: They said I'm out of the running because I'm too young.
Grace: That's not fair!
Rita: It's all right. I'll just have to make do with my allowance.
Grace: I wish you luck. I couldn't manage on NT$200 a week.
葛瑞絲：妳得到想要的那份兼職工作了嗎？
麗塔：沒有，我沒被錄用。
葛瑞絲：怎麼了？
麗塔：他們說我太年輕所以被判出局。
葛瑞絲：那真不公平！
麗塔：沒關係啦。我只好靠零用錢勉強撐一下囉。
葛瑞絲：祝妳好運。我是無法靠新台幣 200 元撐過一星期的。
running 指『賽跑；競賽』。be out of the running 字面上的意思是指『沒有參加比賽』，引申有『淘汰出局』或『沒有勝算』之意。
His nervousness put him out of the running for first prize.
= He didn't stand a chance of winning first prize because of his nervousness.
（因為緊張使得他沒機會得第一。）
＊nervousness n. 緊張，焦躁
與 be out of the running 相反的就是 be in the running，意思是『有獲勝的希望』。
They are both in the running for first prize.
= They both stand a chance of winning first prize.
（他們倆都有希望得到第一名。）
running 也可作名詞『運轉』解，還有下列有趣的用法：
be up and running 開始運作
這個口語用法常用於各種系統或機器上，當技術人員將系統或機器調整到可以運轉時，就可以使用本俚語。
Peter's computer just crashed. Fortunately, the technician soon offered help and it was up and running again.
（彼得的電腦剛剛當機了。幸運的是，技術人員很快伸出援手讓它重新恢復了運作。）
