Grace: Did you get the part-time job you wanted?
   Rita: No, I was turned down for it.
Grace: What happened?
   Rita: They said I'm out of the running because I'm too young.
Grace: That's not fair!
   Rita: It's all right. I'll just have to make do with my allowance.
Grace: I wish you luck. I couldn't manage on NT$200 a week.

 

葛瑞絲：妳得到想要的那份兼職工作了嗎？
　麗塔：沒有，我沒被錄用。
葛瑞絲：怎麼了？
　麗塔：他們說我太年輕所以被判出局。
葛瑞絲：那真不公平！
　麗塔：沒關係啦。我只好靠零用錢勉強撐一下囉。
葛瑞絲：祝妳好運。我是無法靠新台幣 200 元撐過一星期的。

 

俚語精解

running 指『賽跑；競賽』。be out of the running 字面上的意思是指『沒有參加比賽』，引申有『淘汰出局』或『沒有勝算』之意。

His nervousness put him out of the running for first prize.
= He didn't stand a chance of winning first prize because of his nervousness.
（因為緊張使得他沒機會得第一。）
＊nervousness  n. 緊張，焦躁

與 be out of the running 相反的就是 be in the running，意思是『有獲勝的希望』。

---

They are both in the running for first prize.
= They both stand a chance of winning first prize.
（他們倆都有希望得到第一名。）

running 也可作名詞『運轉』解，還有下列有趣的用法：

be up and running  開始運作
這個口語用法常用於各種系統或機器上，當技術人員將系統或機器調整到可以運轉時，就可以使用本俚語。
