A shallow 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on July 28, 2026. The earthquake, later officially named the “Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake” by the Japan Meteorological Agency, prompted the Japanese government to establish an emergency response headquarters. As of August 8, 39 people have died, over 200 have been reported injured, and roughly 6,500 people remained in evacuation shelters. In addition, around 19,000 homes were damaged, including 699 that were completely destroyed.
Major casualties occurred at a Nippon Paper mill in Yatsushiro, where a chimney collapse killed nine workers, and at AEON MALL Kumamoto, where an explosion claimed the lives of seven employees. Water outages affected approximately 36,400 households. Authorities warned of strong aftershocks and the risk of heatstroke as temperatures have reached a record 40°C.
The earthquake had a magnitude of just 3.2, so fortunately it was not strong enough to cause serious damage.
