• Henry seems to be very popular among his colleagues.（同時）
  （亨利似乎在同事之間頗受歡迎。）
• I want you to be invited, too.（較晚、被動）
  （我希望你也能被邀請。）
• The textile industry seems to be going downhill.（同時，正在進行）
  （紡織業似乎正在走下坡。）
• You are supposed to have arrived by now.（較早）
  （你應該老早就到的。）
• The child appeared to have been abused.（較早，被動）
  （這個孩子似乎被人虐待過。）

 

2. 表因果關係 句型：S + V... + so + adj./adv. such (a + n.) + as to + V... 如此…以致…

• She was so(副詞) stupid as to lend him money again.
  （她笨到居然再借他錢。）
• His manner was such(代名詞) as to offend almost everyone present.
  （他的態度如此惡劣以致幾乎得罪在場的每個人。）
   

3. 表意想不到的結果 句型：S + V..., only to + V... 結果卻…

• I tore open the envelope, only to find there was nothing in it.
  （我撕開那個信封，卻發現裡面甚麼也沒有。）
   

 

4. 不定詞（片語）修飾其前的形容詞 句型：S + be + adj + to + V

• If you drive this way, you are sure to get stopped by the police.
  （如果你這樣開車，一定會被警察攔下來。）
• She is likely to be absent from the meeting.
  （她很可能將缺席會議。）
