From the computer screen to the table top

        Role-playing games, or RPGs, are any type of game in which a player takes on the role of a fictional character and goes on an adventure. Generally, RPGs involve lots of exploration of the character’s world and interaction with other in-game characters.

 　　Single-player digital RPGs originated in the 1980s and gained popularity with games like The Legend of Zelda (1986) and Phantasy Star (1987). These games focus on solving puzzles and fighting enemies to increase a character’s strength or abilities. In the 1990s, series like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest became classics of the genre. As technology improved, the ability to design and alter a character’s appearance with costumes or equipment became an essential part of the digital RPG experience. This can be seen in Fallout , The Elder Scrolls , and Diablo .

 　　Then, there are the online multiplayer RPGs, which also emerged in the 1980s. In fact, some of the earliest online chat rooms were used for RPGs. Using only basic text input and random number generators, players used collaborative storytelling to create their adventure. Believe it or not, these simple chat rooms led to games like World of Warcraft (2004), a revolutionary multiplayer RPG that changed online gaming forever.

 　　單人的數位 RPG 起源於 1980 年代，其後因為像是《薩爾達傳說》（1986）和《夢幻之星》（1987）等遊戲而人氣漸長。這些遊戲聚焦在藉由破解難題和打敗敵人來增長角色的力量或技能。在 1990 年代，像《Final Fantasy》和《勇者鬥惡龍》的系列遊戲成為這類型電玩的經典之作。隨著科技的進步，透過服裝或道具來設計並改變角色外貌的能力變成了數位 RPG 體驗的一個重要部分。而這都出現在 《 異塵餘生》、《上古卷軸》和《暗黑破壞神》這些遊戲中。

 　　此外，還有線上的多人版 RPG，這些遊戲也是在 1980 年代出現。事實上，有一些最早的線上聊天室就是用來玩 RPG 的。玩家們僅使用基本的文字輸入和亂數產生器，透過合作的敘事來創造他們的冒險故事。信不信由你，這些簡單的聊天室促成了《魔獸世界》 （ 2004）的誕生，一個永遠改變線上遊戲的革命性多人 RPG。
