From a terrible opening day to the most popular theme park in the world.
Disney theme parks can be found around the world. The first park was built in Anaheim, California in the United States. At first, Walt Disney wanted to call it Mickey Mouse Park. In the end, the name Disneyland was chosen for the new park.
The park’s building process began on July 16, 1954, and Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955. Unfortunately, opening day went terribly. The weather was especially hot, but the drinking fountains weren’t available for use yet. The park also wasn’t completely finished. Three areas of the park had to be closed for safety reasons just a few hours after opening. In spite of all of the problems, Disneyland became extremely popular. Within seven weeks, one million people had visited the park. By 1956, five million people had entered through the park’s gates.
