put on 之後接表衣物鞋帽等名詞作其受詞,表『穿/戴上』。cap 一字指『帽子』,如 a baseball cap 是『棒球帽』,a shower cap 則是『浴帽』。put on one's thinking cap 字面上的意思就是『戴上思考的帽子』。據說以前英國的法官在宣判重大案件時,必須頭戴象徵深思熟慮的帽子。因此本俚語就被用來比喻動腦筋仔細思考。
