當 play 作為動詞時，它的主要意思是進行娛樂活動，例如玩遊戲、演奏音樂、戲劇表演等等。除此之外，play 還可以表示模擬或假扮某個角色或事物。以下將分門別類介紹實際的用法：
1 玩遊戲（play a game）：
play chess 下棋
play cards 玩牌
play pool 打撞球
play video games 玩電子遊戲
- My grandfather taught me how to play chess when I was young.（我祖父在我年幼時教我下棋。）
- Let's play cards after dinner.（晚飯後我們打牌吧。）
- We used to play pool at the bar every weekend.（我們以前每個週末都在酒吧打撞球。）
- My little brother spends all his free time playing video games.（我弟弟所有的空閒時間都花在玩電子遊戲上。）
2 娛樂、休閒活動：
play fetch with ... 和（狗）玩丟接遊戲
play house 玩扮家家酒
play marbles 打彈珠
play on a seesaw 玩蹺蹺板
play on a swing 盪鞦韆
- My dog loves it when I play fetch with him.(我的狗狗很喜歡我跟他玩接物遊戲。)
- When I was little, I loved to play house with my friends.（我小時候喜歡和朋友們玩家家酒。）
- When I was a kid, I used to love playing marbles with my friends.（我小時候很喜歡和朋友玩彈珠。）
- The children were having fun playing on the seesaw in the park.（孩子們在公園裡的蹺蹺板上玩得很開心。）
- The little girl giggled as she played on the swing in the backyard.（小女孩在後院的鞦韆上玩耍時咯咯笑了起來。）
3 演奏樂器（play an instrument）：

- She played classical music for the audience.（她為觀眾演奏古典音樂。）
- They decided to play some background music during the party.（他們決定在派對上播放一些背景音樂。）
- She learned to play the harmonica from her grandfather.（她從她的祖父學習吹口琴。）
- He has been playing the flute since he was a child.（他從小就開始學習吹笛子。）

4 扮演角色（play a role）：
play a part of... 扮演......的角色
play a role in （在⋯⋯方面）扮演某種角色
play a(n) + adj. + role in... 在……方面扮演……的作用 / 角色
play an important / crucial / vital role in 在某事中扮演重要 / 關鍵 / 重要的角色或作用。
- He played the part of the villain in the movie.（他在電影中扮演反派角色。）
- The actor played the part of a detective in the movie.（那位演員在電影中飾演一位偵探。）
- He played a major role in the success of the project.（他在這個項目的成功中扮演了重要角色。）
- Education plays an important role in shaping a person's character.（教育在形塑一個人的性格方面扮演著重要的角色。）
- The weather played a decisive role in the outcome of the battle.（天氣在戰爭的結果中起了決定性的作用。）
5 從事某些運動：
play basketball 打籃球
play tennis 打網球
play volleyball 打排球
play badminton 打羽毛球
play soccer 踢足球
play football 打美式橄欖球〔美〕；踢足球〔英〕
- I love playing sports, especially basketball.（我喜歡打球，特別是籃球。）
- I used to play basketball in high school.（我在高中時曾經打籃球。)
- My friends and I often play tennis on the weekends.（我和我的朋友經常在週末打網球。)
- We had a great time playing volleyball at the beach yesterday.（昨天我們在海灘上打排球玩得很開心。)
- Every evening, my grandparents play badminton in the park.（每天晚上，我的祖父母在公園裡打羽毛球。)
- The kids in the neighborhood love to play soccer together.（附近的孩子們喜歡一起踢足球。)
- My younger brother is on the school football team and he loves to play football.（我弟弟是學校橄欖球隊的成員，他很喜歡踢橄欖球。)

6 開玩笑、惡作劇、玩弄：
play a joke 開玩笑
play a joke on sb 對某人開玩笑
play a trick on sb 戲 / 捉弄某人
play dirty tricks on sb 對某人使用卑劣手段或詭計
- Don't take it seriously, I was just playing a joke.（別當真，我只是在開玩笑。）
- Don't play a joke on me like that!（不要這樣開我玩笑！）
- The kids played a trick on their teacher.（那些孩子對他們的老師惡作劇。）
- I can't believe he played such dirty tricks on his own brother.（我不敢相信他竟對自己的兄弟使出如此卑劣的手段。）
- The company played dirty tricks on its competitors by stealing their trade secrets.（這家公司通過竊取競爭對手的商業機密使用卑劣手段對抗他們。）
7 表達消極、不負責任的態度：

play possum 裝死，裝作沒有反應

- I can't believe he's still playing around instead of looking for a job.（我不敢相信他還在瞎搞，而不是去找工作。)

- He played dumb when the teacher asked him who broke the window.（老師問誰打破了窗戶，他裝作不知道。）
